An inspired second half showing propelled Camptown to a 3-1 upset result over Santos when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Stag Beer League continued yesterday at the Georgetown Football Club, Bourda.
Falling behind to a second minute strike after Josh Parvatan stabbed a loose ball into the net, Anthony Sancho initiated the comeback in the 53rd minute compliments of a penalty conversion down the centre, following a wild challenge inside the box after the aforesaid forward raced away from his marker.
Camptown almost took the lead two minutes later but Sancho struck the woodwork, curling a left sided strike onto the crossbar, much to the relief of the stranded goalkeeper.
Santos was then dealt a severe blow as Jermin Fraser was sent off in the 60th minute after picking up his second yellow card for a rash tackle outside the box.
Meanwhile, Kasey Robinson should have given Camptown the lead moments later but directed his headed effort wide of the right corner following a one-on-one situation with the advancing goalkeeper.
Camptown duly grabbed the lead in the 63rd minute when veteran defender Leon Muir scored. Latching onto a through pass inside the left of the box Muir finished past the advancing ‘keeper into the lower right corner.
The chances continued to be crafted for the Campbellville unit and Robinson was guilty once more of missing an easy opportunity in the 69th minute.
It was chance that was harder to actually miss than to score as Robinson, from inside the centre of the six yard box unchallenged, headed a left side cross from Sancho over the crossbar, much to everyone’s disbelief.
Ultimately, the miss didn’t prove costly as Sancho put the game to bed in the 71st minute, racing down the left flank before dribbling his marker and finishing past the custodian into the lower right corner.
With the win, Camptown climbed to 14 points and remain in fifth position while the losers remain on 17 points and in the second position.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) arrested Beacons 4-1 in the opening matchup to climb to third in the standings. Quincy Holder broke the deadlock for the lawmen compliments of 23rd minute from inside the penalty box.
The score became 2-0 in the 40th minute as Holder netted his second, racing down the centre of the box to latch onto a lobbed pass before firing his effort into the roof of the corner.
A deserved hat-trick was completed in the 52nd minute to push the score line to 3-0 as Holder scored in similar fashion to the second, racing onto another lobbed past into the box before finish past the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
Lerone Charles fired the final shot for the officers eighth minutes onward, striking a tame attempt from outside the right of the box, which rolled pass the diving goalkeeper and settled into the lower right corner.
Beacons eventually recorded a consolation goal in the 85th minute through Royston Dublin who dribbled the onrushing in the centre of the box during a one on one situation, before slotting home a left foot shot into the lower right corner.
Due to the result, GPF move onto 16 points. On the other hand, Beacons remain in the cellar position on four points.
