Coleus commonly called Joseph’s Coat originated in Indonesia, Thailand and the East Indies and is a member of the Mint family.
Coleus is sometime referred to as a poor man’s croton because of the brightness and colour that make up the foliage. It is quite eye catching!
Coleus leaves are velvety, soft with spires of small lavender to blue flowers.
There are approximately 60 species of Coleus. The most beautiful and popular is Verschaffettii commonly called Painted Nettle. It has large, glowing crimson leaves, with purple in the centre and narrow Nile green border with blue flowers. Some other Coleus are: Pride of Autumn, Butterfly Coleus, Red Trailing Queen, and Brilliancy Salmon Lace which are ideal for any centrepiece, borders or potted plant for the garden with its multicolour display.
Coleus are easy to grow. They can be grown from seeds or cuttings. Just remember to pinch the centre of the Coleus to encourage bushing. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every two weeks. You would enjoy Coleus plants for many month. Make sure that your potted plants have proper drainage holes now that the rain is here and now is the time to spike your lawn.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
