Back Circle, Queen Street Tiger Bay, Festival City Warriors and North East La Penitence were among the sides to seal opening night wins when the Sparta Boss third anniversary 5-a-side knockout football championships commenced to Monday.
Staged at the Sparta Boss Tarmac in East La Penitence in front of a sizeable crowd, Back Circle edged fierce rival West Front Road by a 1-0 margin. Kemo Lawrence scored in the 15th minute.
Queen Street Tiger Bay edged Chester Jewellery 2-0. Deon Alfred opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a left foot strike from the left side which settled into the right corner.
James Meredith put the game to bed in the 18th minute, racing down the right side following a counterattack before lashing a powerful right foot effort through the legs of the final defender into the centre of the net.
Meanwhile, Festival City Warriors defeated Albouystown 1-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended scoreless. Daniel Favourite was the difference on the night as he converted from the spot as the others failed from the distance.
Also, North East La Penitence downed Holmes Street Tiger Bay, winning via a 3-2 result on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 0-0.
In other results, Leopold Street defeated Guyhoc Skulls 2-1 on penalty kicks after normal time concluded with the score 0-0.
On the other hand, Bent Street edged Inna Real Life by a 2-1 margin while Festival City Street Fighters claimed a hard-fought result after squeaking past Fruit Stand by a 1-0 score line.
Broad Street claimed an easy victory without breaking a sweat as they defeated Sparta Boss via a walkover. Winner of the event will walk away with $300,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $200,000 and the respective accolade.
The third placed side will receive $100,000 and a trophy. The quarterfinal round starts tomorrow at the same venue from 20:00hrs.
