A new president of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) will be elected today when that body stages its annual general meeting from 5.30pm at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
A number nominations have been received for executive posts and, according to a press release, incumbent president
will be ineligible to run for another term given the organisation’s two term constitutional limitations.
McCalman, the release stated, has embraced this position in a bid to continue to harness new professionals to create opportunities for new ideas as she urges local tennis veterans who can provide guidance to come forth and support the executive of the day.
In this regard she extends greatest appreciation to Samuel Barakat, Ramesh Seebarran, Harry Panday, Dr. Steve Surujbally, Rudy Grant, John Tracey, Fritz Mc Lean, overseas based Brian Fung, Dr. Arthur Hazelwood and Bill Adams for their unwavering support during her tenure and hopes for this interest to continue, the release stated.
“With the change in administration, we have made progress in certain critical areas as we aim to provide the best environment to attract sponsors and for players to reach their fullest potential,” said Mc Calman.
“We have always had great local talent and within my tenure I have enjoyed a period of great improvement among the younger juniors through extra practice time granted at the GBTI tennis courts and now they have come out of the woodworks and are challenging our top players.”
Mc Calman was high in praise of the active members of her current executive, who she describes as having been patient in their quest for better facilities to provide more on court practice and off court exercises in mental fortitude.
These will form the foundation for players to make a greater impact regionally. More significantly, she congratulated the active tennis clubs who have limited shared playtime at the public facilities but continue to attract new players and develop their training programmes, stated the release.
Nominations were drawn from the five active tennis clubs, Le Ressouvenir, Sheltez, Rebel, Roraima and Non-Pariel for the executive positions of President(1), 1st Vice-President(1), 2nd Vice-President(1), Treasurer(1), Secretary(1), Committee Member(4). Other positions that require volunteers are Assistant Secretary Treasurer(1), Public Relations Officer(1), Assistant Public Relations Officer(1).
