A five-month- old infant died on Wednesday at the city public hospital after a truck hit his stroller while he was being pushed across a road at Belmont, East Coast Demerara.
The dead child has been identified as Feoad Jimicke Williams, of Lot 95 Belmont.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 5pm, when the truck was proceeding along an access road at Belmont. It is alleged that an eight-year-old cousin of the child was pushing Williams in a stroller and attempted to cross the road. The vehicle then collided with the stroller.
Stabroek News understands that the baby was rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital for medical attention and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the truck is currently in police custody.
Stabroek News learned that the truck was turning out of the Helena Number One road onto the market dam, where the child was pushing the stroller, which was struck by the front wheel of the vehicle.
After the collision, the truck driver stopped and family members who were nearby rendered assistance. Stabroek News learned that the infant was removed from the stroller by the cousin and taken to the hospital by an aunt.
