An independent candidate from the Soesdyke/Huist Coverden local authority area has been elected as Vice-Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).
Aaron Grant Stuart, from the independent Group Soesdyke Te Huist Te Coverden Torchbearers, was elected as Vice-Chairman, while Dinesh Singh from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) was elected as the Chairman.
Stabroek News understands that during the elections, Stuart was the only nominee for the post as no one from the major political groups, PPP/C and APNU+AFC put up any nominees for the post.
The Soesdyke/ Huist Coverden Torchbearers Enhancement Group won a single seat in the proportional representation component of local government elections for the 18-seat council.
The PPP/C won nine seats and APNU+AFC eight. It meant that the PPP/C would have had to do a deal with one of the two groups to ensure decisions are supported otherwise there would be gridlock. It appears that the PPP/C struck a deal with the independent candidate.
Despite the configuration of the new NDC, the Chairman Singh told Stabroek News he is in no way intimidated by the situation. He explained he and the new council are interested in moving the community forward by doing what is best for them.
