US Embassy’s HAP assists in Zeelugt medical outreach

A number of people received treatment at a medical outreach organised by the US Embassy’s Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) and local community groups at the Zeelugt Primary School on Sunday.

Program Director Eric Antunucci told Stabroek News that patients received drugs for various illnesses, at the pharmacy set up at the venue, including diabetes and hypertension. The drugs were provided by the US Embassy. They also benefited from HIV counselling and testing.

Antunucci said the idea was to help as many people as possible and he was grateful to the 10 doctors who came out and volunteered their free time, especially Dr Bassoo of the Toucan School of Medical Sciences of Cove and John, who provided a lot of support.

Dr Bassoo, he said, coordinated with his contacts to bring out the doctors, as well as four medical students, a pharmacist and three pharmacy technicians who were happy to practice their skills.

The team is also organising a health fair as part of the Linden Town Week activities and is working with the mayor.

Also assisting at the Zeelugt outreach was a Miss Guyana World finalist Divya Yabindranauth, who is representing Region One (Barima/Waini).

Yabindranauth is Regional Director for Guyana for the charitable organization, Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA), which is aimed at providing financial medical assistance coupled with pro-bono or subsidised medical treatment for the underprivileged.

The young beauty has set up a GoFundMe account though which she hopes to raise US$10,000 for SHEA. She urges everyone who wants to learn more to visit and like her Facebook page: Barima/Waini.
