Haemanthus Katherinae commonly called Blood Lily originated in South Africa and is a member of the Amaryllis family.
The Blood Lily received its name from the red stains on the large flower head. The bulb produces 4 to 5 broad evergreen leaves approximately 12 inches tall with a large ball-like cluster red flower with myriad thread-like stamen.
Plant bulb in well-drained soil. You can add some sand or loam to the mixture and place a single bulb or a cluster of 3 bulbs in a pot or container. Set the bulb/s with the tip/s above the soil and press down the soil around it firmly.
Water lightly just to keep the soil moist until leaves begin to appear, which should be within 6 to 8 weeks.
Feed with Miracle Gro Plant Food every 2 weeks.
Remember all bulbs have a rest period so it is okay if the bulb goes to sleep after blooming.
In Guyana, the Blood Lily is exhibited at the Annual Flower Show and usually cops the first or second prize.
