The driver who reportedly ran over the head of a still unidentified man on Tuesday afternoon resulting in the man’s death has been released on station bail.
This was confirmed by Acting Traffic Chief Budnarine Persaud yesterday. The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm at the junction of Sheriff and Garnett streets on Tuesday.
Persons in the area had related to Stabroek News that the victim was known as “Michael” and “Jail Man” and he frequently did odd jobs around the area.
He was also described as an alcoholic, who was released from prison two weeks ago.
This newspaper was previously informed that the now dead man was seen in the vicinity begging for a soft drink to use with the loaf of bread he had. He eventually got the drink but while he was walking along the roadway, the drink reportedly rolled under a container truck, which was waiting for the traffic light to change.
One man had related that he was on the opposite side of the road when he heard a loud impact. He said when he looked over the road, he saw the man lying motionless with his face smashed.
Following the incident, the driver of the truck drove some distance before he stopped. Police subsequently took him into custody.
