Due to persistent rainfall, the Mayor’s Cup football championships have been rescheduled for Thursday at the Den Amstel ground in West Demerara.
The event was scheduled to commence today at the Victoria ground and continue tomorrow at the same location but has been pushed back due to a waterlogged playing surface.
The matches that were to start the tournament were Mahaica against Eagles United of Linden and Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph against Milerock. The matches rescheduled from tomorrow are Golden Grove against Grove Hi-Tech and Ann’s Grove against Buxton Stars.
The event will now commence with Uitvlugt opposing Herstelling and Pouderoyen tackling Kuru-Kururu.
Tournament coordinator, Lennox Arthur, in an invited comment said: “Due to the rain the field is currently under water. I just came back from there [Victoria] so games for today and tomorrow have been called off.
“We will start on Thursday at the Den Amstel ground. The fixture will not change. We will start the tournament with those games and continue on Friday as well at the Den Amstel ground. Those games that were rescheduled from Victoria will be played the following week.”
The 24-team event, which will be played on a knockout basis, will feature teams from five associations. The Guyana Police Force, Western Tigers, Riddim Squad, Santos and Camptown fall under the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) umbrella while Mahaica Determinators, Ann’s Grove, Victoria Kings, Golden Grove, Buxton Stars and Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph United will represent the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA).
The Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) will be represented by Milerock, Eagles and Federal Winners Connection while Den Amstel, Pouderoyen, Uitvlugt, Beavers and Eagles will be the participants from the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) while the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) will field the likes of Grove Hi-Tech, Agricola Red Triangle, Soesdyke, Herstelling Raiders and Kuru-Kururu Warriors.
The venues that will be utilized for the event are the Victoria Community Ground, Den Amstel Community ground and Georgetown Football Club (GFC).
Winner of the event will receive $700,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
