Magistrate Judy Latchman ordered that a Cuban who appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court last week having overstayed her time here, pay a fine of $30,000 or spend two weeks in prison, then be deported to her homeland.
Elizabeth Rodrigues had pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that between April 23 and April 27, she failed to comply with the permit that only gave her permission to stay in Guyana until April 22.
Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, told the court that the defendant entered the country on March 22. She was granted one month to stay in Guyana. He said that on April 27 at 20:30 hrs, the defendant was in a vehicle when she was stopped at a road block at Providence. She indicated to the police that she had her passport on her, which served as an identification document. When the police checked the passport they realized that she had overstayed her time. The prosecutor added that she was then escorted by the police to Eve Leary.
According to Rodriques, through an interpreter, what the prosecutor had told the court was correct. She said she overstayed because she did not pay attention to the date in her passport because it was all too confusing to her.
