Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Barton Scotland this afternoon allowed a motion by former Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee to have the House debate the crime situation as a matter of urgent public importance.
In supporting his motion Rohee, who is also the General Secretary of the PPP, said that the crime situation over the last year has been rising and it is painful going to wakes of crime victims. He also said victims, civil society and other organisations have been calling on the government to respond to the crime situation.
“We de call for your resignation,” Chief Whip on the government side and Minister of Social Cohesion Amna Ally quipped in response to Rohee. She later questioned whether the crime situation was more alarming than the period when Rohee was security minister.
In response Dr Scotland said that Rohee’s motion meets all the requirements and the subject matter is indeed an urgent and important one. Consequently he said he will permit a debate on the matter after the break.
