An absent Rawle Brammer, who was charged last November with having 154 grammes of cannabis at his home for trafficking, was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after being found guilty.
The charge against Brammer stated that on November 19th, 2015, at Eight Street, Section ‘B,’ Block ‘X,’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara, had in his possession 154 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Magistrate Judy Latchman handed down the verdict although Brammer was not in attendance at the hearing. The court heard that the defendant, after giving an unsworn statement, elected to call several witnesses but neither him nor them appeared in court yesterday.
In her ruling, the magistrate stated that she believed that the defendant had control of the cannabis, while noting that in his statement he had acknowledged the narcotics and he also had knowledge of it.
Magistrate Latchman further stated that based on the amount of cannabis found, it was determined that it was to be trafficked.
In addition to the jail sentence, Brammer was also fined $30,000.
