The Ministry of Public Health in collaboration with charity organisation, Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK) today opened the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Bartica Regional Hospital in Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).
A release from the Ministry of Public Health said that this was done at a brief ceremony which was attended by Head of State, President David Granger; First Lady, Sandra Granger; Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton, other Government ministers, GHTK Representatives and Regional health officials.
The release said that Norton, in addressing the gathering, pointed out that the opening of the NICU will see fewer women having to travel from Region 7 to Region 3 for specialised Health-care.
“While the NICU provides a better and cleaner environment for our infants, doctors and nurses will be stationed in the NICU and will provide the necessary specialist care for our infants. These persons would have undergone training in the areas of neonatal care and pediatrics and are now fully capable of providing better care to all babies born at the Bartica Regional Hospital,” he stated.
The subject minister expressed thanks to the GHTK which has thus far opened 6 NICU’s countrywide in its bid to reduce neonatal mortality in Guyana.
