The release of some prisoners by President David Granger is a welcome new approach to tackling crime in Guyana.
It is my personal belief that this has led to some offenders confessing to their crimes as they do not feel embattled.
However, what President David Granger needs to consider is whether a better approach would not be to mentor some offenders. To mentor 100 offenders back into society would cost less than US$1m (G$200m) per year. This is not about continuously monitoring offenders. It is more about helping them to readjust back into society by helping them to make a positive contribution to society. Hence, they would feel a part of society and be less likely to reoffend.
