A one-day Sports Journalism Seminar organised by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will be held today at the GOA office, High Street.
The event is scheduled to get underway at 9am but participants are requested to be there by 8.30am for the commencement of the registration process.
Certificates will be presented to the participants at the conclusion of the seminar.
According to a release, the seminar will address a number of issues related to sports journalism including coverage of the upcoming Summer Olympics in neighbouring Brazil. Resource persons will include Ms. Carolyn Walcott, an Ohio University-trained Journalism Professor and Bert Wikinson, Associated Press correspondent and a former Stabroek News reporter. Wilkinson is also on the board of the Guyana Chronicle and has served in various capacities on the Guyana Press Association making him one of the more experienced journalists in Guyana.
Also expected to lend his considerable expertise in the field of sports journalism is Leon Horatio, current Sports Editor of the Guyana Chronicle who is himself a fountain of knowledge in the field of sports journalism in Guyana.
According to the release, the objectives of the seminar are (a) to provide training in sports reporting for reporters in Guyana to better articulate and disseminate sports news, (b) to stimulate interest in sports journalism among Guyanese reporters thereby creating niche for those who have an interest in the area and (c) to prepare a cadre of sports reporters to cover the 2016 Olympic Games and to sustain interest and coverage of sports in Guyana and internationally.
All are invited and the GOA is looking forward to participation of journalists from various outlying regions including Berbice, Essequibo, West Denmerara and other areas, stated the release.
