Crocus commonly called Rain Lilies in Guyana originated in the Mediterranean Region and South West Asia and is a member of the Iris family.
Crocuses are grown from corms and are hardy plants that you can enjoy for several months of each year in the garden.
The Crocus has basal, grass-like leaves with slender tubular flowers on short stems.
While there are several varieties of Crocus it is the Dutch varieties which stand out. They are vigorous and adapted to a wider range of climates.
Here in Guyana, they are two types – the Pink Crocus that bears for many months and the Yellow variety, which is referred to as Rain Lilies, as they bloom shortly after it rains.
Crocuses create a striking impression when planted along border or used as ground cover.
They can be planted in full sun in well-drained soil. Feed with Miracle Gro Plant Food once every 2 weeks. Some popular Crocuses are Crocus chrysanthus, Cream Beauty, Goldilocks and Princess Beatrix.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
