Despite being outplayed for large portions of the game Fruta Conquerors scraped past Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 2-0 when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued Sunday.
Held at the Leonora Sports Facility, Hubert Pedro recorded a brace in the fifth and 80th minutes helping the Tucville unit clinch their 10th win and move to 31 points, second in the point’s standings.
GFC, who are yet to record a win, sit in the cellar position on two points. Returning to the scene of their 8-1 humiliation to Slingerz FC days earlier, the Tucville unit got off to the perfect start as Pedro curled an indirect free-kick from the centre of the area, into the top right hand corner.
However, that proved to be the only threatening attempt on target for the Tucville unit in the period. Despite having the lion’s share of possession, Conquerors failed to create clear cut chances in the final third while the Bourda-based outfit looked dangerous on the counterattack.
They should have equalised in the 12th minute but Lavaughn Boodhie was denied by the legs of goalkeeper Dennis Edwards after racing into the box to be in a one-on-one situation.
Boodhie was guilty again of wasting another great chance as he was denied by the goalkeeper to his left in the 32nd minute from inside the left of the box.
Peter Parks was next to be denied by Edwards in the 41st minute as his powerful strike from the top of the box was parried by the diving ‘shot-stopper’ to his left.
Following the resumption of the contest in the second stanza, Fruta Conquerors crafted their second attempt on goal in the 60th minute as a sliding effort from Pedro crashed into the right post, after collecting a left side cross from Jamaal Codrington in the box.
On the other side of the field, GFC continued to threaten and almost levelled the outcome three minutes later, only for Edwards to parry a lobbed shot from Keiron Solomon wide of the target, after the forward raced past the final defender into the penalty area.
The contest was put to bed following waves of attacking pressure from GFC as Pedro curled a right foot free-kick from 30 yards out on the left side which settled into the lower left hand corner.
Meanwhile, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) overcame Berbice unit Monedderlust 4-2 compliments of a helmet trick from Delroy Fraser.
The nippy forward grabbed the opener in the 16th minute through a penalty conversion before doubling his team’s lead 10 minutes later. Racing into the right side of the box, he unleashed a thunderbolt into the left corner of the net.
However, the momentum of the contest changed as Monedderlust levelled the contest in the space of two minutes.
Keron McDonald pulled one back in the 36th minute, racing into the centre of the box to collect a through pass, before finishing under the advancing goalkeeper into the centre of the net.
The score was then levelled in the 38th minute as McDonald scored his second, lashing his effort into the roof of the net from the top of the box, after collecting a left side pass from Kevin Cottoy.
Nevertheless, the army pushed ahead in the 75th minute as Fraser finished into the net from the right side of the six yard area, after collecting a flat left side cross.
The match was put to bed in the 86th minute as Fraser slotted home into the right hand corner from inside the centre of the area.
With the result, GDF moved to 17 points and remain in fifth position while Monedderlust, with their ninth loss, remain in the seventh position on six points.
