A carpenter was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after he admitted to stealing a quantity of gold jewellery while on hire for a plumbing job.
Michael Hemraj, 40, pleaded guilty to stealing jewellery, worth $356,000, from Carletta Norton on April 28, 2016, at Meadow-bank, when he appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess.
The prosecution’s facts state that Norton had contacted Hemraj for work she needed done on the house, and at some point while he was there, she left to go out. When she returned, Norton reportedly sent the defendant out on an errand, and while he was gone, made checks for her jewellery, only to discover it missing.
Reports were subsequently made to the police and on May 7, Hemraj was taken into custody after admitting to stealing the jewellery.
