Three men, suspected to have stolen a bag containing a gun, ammunition and a quantity of money from a car parked outside Juice Power on Middle Street, Georgetown, were yesterday granted bail after making an appearance before a city court.
Taxi driver Afzad Khan, 52, of 149 Belle West, Canal Number 2, taxi driver Randell Douglas, 37 of 42 Palm Street, Werk-en-Rust and businessman Parmanand Rampersaud, 55, of 396 Kaneville, were apprehended on Saturday by police after they were allegedly identified using CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
The accused, who were represented by attorney Patrice Henry, were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on April 26, 2016, at Middle Street Georgetown, they stole from a bag containing $400,000, a .32 Taurus pistol, valued $150,000, and 45 live .32 ammunition, valued $2,250. The total value of the stolen articles is $552,250.
According to the prosecution’s case, the stolen items were left by the owner, Brian Narine, in his car, which was parked outside of Juice Power.
Narine reportedly left to get a meal and when he returned, sometime later, he found the doors to the car open and realised that the bag containing the articles were missing.
The three men were granted bail although objections were raised by the prosecution.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail on the basis that the men have several charges of a similar nature pending before the court, the prevalence of the offence, and the likelihood that they would commit similar offences if released on bail.
Bail was set at $250,000 for each man by Magistrate Dylon Bess, who adjourned the matter until May 16.
