Charles, Kellman, proud, excited over selection

Guyana-born English footballer Ishankie Charles said he is honoured by his selection to the Golden Jaguars 25-man squad ahead of this Sunday’s international encounter against the Canadian Olympic U23 side at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

The match, which is part of the 50th jubilee celebrations, is expected to be a highly competitive encounter between the two countries and Charles, who spoke with Stabroek Sport yesterday following the team’s training session at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground, said he was overly excited to make the squad.

“I’m absolutely proud and honoured to make the squad. I haven’t made the team yet so I will have to continue working hard. I’m just proud to be a part of the team,” said the West Demerara-born footballer who left these shores at the age of 13.

Speaking a little about himself, the left-wing back said upon leaving Guyana he went to London where he began playing most of his soccer in the Semi-Professional league before returning to his country of birth.

Charles, who represented Cray Wanderers FC before signing with his current club Kenningwell FC, said he is hopeful of being selected to fulfill his role in the team at the left-back position which he’s currently playing well in.

The Englishman, who is also the older brother of Lady Jags forward Otesha Charles, said that both himself and his sister are really proud to be representing their country at the highest level and are keen on doing their best for the betterment of their respective teams. Meanwhile, another newbie, George-town Football Club (GFC) midfielder Cortez Kellman, was also elated about being selected in the 25-man team.

The 17-year-old during his brief invited comment said: “It is a proud moment to be selected to the national team as one of the youngest players.”

He added that he will now be aiming to continue his good work on the field with the hope of making the team for Sunday’s international friendly.

The 25 man squad reads: Alex Murray, Joshua Browne, Solomon Austin, Colin Nelson, Kester Jacobs, Eon Alleyne, Gregory Richardson, Devon Millington, Daniel Wilson, Dwight Peters, Trayon Bobb, Quincy Adams, Delon Lanferman, Anthony Whyte, Daniel Whyte, Clive Nobrega, Marcel Barrington, Mustapha Hack Hubert Pedro, Les Charles Critchlow, Jahaal Greaves and Cortez Kellman.
