PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC-The World’s leading T20 International wicket-taker Anisa Mohammed has appealed to cricket fans to support the regional team when they take on England Women in a five-match One-Day International series this October in the Caribbean.
Still on a high from winning the ICC T20 World Cup, West Indies Women clash with England from October 8-9, at two venues in Jamaica.
The first two games have been scheduled for October 8 and 10 at the Trelawny Stadium while the last three games, will take place at Sabina Park on October 14, 16 and 19.
“It would be really nice to see our supporters coming out to give us some cheer on the day,” said Mohammed, who made her debut for West Indies at the age of 15 and now has 101 T20 International wickets to her credit as well as 130 ODI wickets.
“A lot of people had previously said to me that they woke up early to watch the T20 Tournament (in India), so it would be great for us to continue receiving such support when England visits the Caribbean”.
The Caribbean women claimed their first Women’s T20 World Cup with a pulsating eight-wicket win over Australia.
The series against England will the first for West Indies Women since their historic title winning performance in India.
“A lot of people have never actually seen us play as a team live, so we are optimistic that this tour would reignite that spark in our fans.” Said the 27 year old Trinidadian spinner.
The final three games of the series will be designated with ICC Women’s Championship points.
West Indies Women are second in the ICC Women’s Championship on 20 points, four points adrift of Australia Women.
“I would really like to see more tours coming to the Caribbean, but it’s the ICC’s (International Cricket Council) decision,” said Mohammed.
“More games in the Caribbean though, will augur well for women’s cricket regionally.”
