The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) is seeking a meeting with former members of the Rosinante Farmers’ Co-operative Society members next Friday, to discuss regularization of the state lands once held by the co-op.
“Notice is hereby given that the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission will be holding a meeting on the 20th May, 2016 at 10:00 hrs…” an advertisement currently being run in the daily newspapers states.
GL&SC says that all persons, having any rights, interests or claim in or to the lands, by virtue of any document or otherwise are invited to attend the meeting.
The meeting will be held at the GLSC boardroom, Upper Hadfield Street.
The Rosinante Co-op was embroiled in a bitter land dispute back in 1995 and saw political intervention from then Opposition Leader Desmond Hoyte who flayed then President Cheddi Jagan, for allowing the state to take away the lands from the Rosinante Coop and give it to the Boerasirie Co-op.
Hoyte had taken sides in the land dispute between the two farmers’ groups on the East Bank of the Essequibo, after Jagan had ordered that lands belonging to them be given to the Boerasirie Co-op. The feud, which led to court action and a court ruling, continued with both laying legal claim to the former sugar lands, distributed to registered co-operatives under the PNC administration dating back to 1968.
The lands remained with the Boaraserie Co-op but it is unclear if the terms of their leases have been upheld.
Hoyte had told the farmers also that for them to accept the lands being taken away from them was a ploy of the PPP (People’s Progressive Party) to monopolize everything.
