Puran Brothers Disposal Inc. and Cevons Waste Management are owed millions of dollars by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown for garbage collection in the city.
On Wednesday, both companies confirmed to Stabroek News that they are owed millions and have not received any word from the City Treasurer’s Department on a payment date.
Kalesh Puran, Manager of Puran Brothers Disposal Inc., said the company has indicated to the City Council its outstanding balance through a formal letter. Puran said it is owed over $60 million. He explained that for garbage collection around the city in the months of January to April, it is owed more than $40 million and for works carried out at Haags Bosch dumpsite it is owed approximately $20 million.
Further, he said his company is pushing for the payments from the City Council as it is almost at the limit of its overdraft. He expressed hope to receive payment from the Council by today to help offset its debt.
Meanwhile, Cevons Waste Management would only confirm that it is owed by the city. A manager was unable to comment further as the Chief Executive Officer was out of the office.
Efforts to contact the city administration for a comment proved futile.
