Children of woman dying in the US refused visas to see her

Dear Editor,

This is a very sad story of a family that really needs the intervention of the Government of Guyana, but the refusal to even try to help them is heartbreaking.

Sharina Khan left Guyana April 5, 2016 for her first ever trip to the United States, but unfortunately one week into her vacation she fell gravely ill. Sharina was diagnosed with stage four lung and brain cancer and is unable to return to Guyana because she is in no condition to fly.  Sharina’s children were very happy that their mom was able to finally take a vacation but did not know that it was the last time they would see their mother alive.  Sharina is 41 years old and no one expected this grim diagnosis. Attempts were made for the children to acquire visas but they were refused on the basis that they may not return to Guyana. These kids have no intention of staying in the United States; all they want is to spend their mother’s last days with her and bring her body back to Guyana.

I am writing this letter because I am hoping that there is someone who can still step up and help this desperate and grieving family.  You can reply to my email lorraine_gonsalves@yahoo.com.

Yours faithfully,

Lorraine Gonsalves
