After sweeping the podium last year, Team Gillette Evolution (TGE) cyclists will start as favourites for this weekend’s ‘Golden Jubilee Three-Stage road race’ which pedals off today in Berbice.
TGE cyclists has won 16 of the 19 open races staged so far this season and will be gunning for a repeat of Guyana’s longest tenured road race.
Led by Orville Hinds who won the 33rd edition last year in six hours, 50 minutes and 37 seconds, TGE crowded the podium with Michael Anthony and Raul Leal placing second and third respectively.
The first leg is scheduled to pedal off this morning at 07:30hrs from the Corriverton Police Station and finish at New Amsterdam. (46.6 Miles) (75km).
The second stage starts at 14:00hrs from Rosignol and will proceed to CARIFESTA Avenue, Georgetown for the finish. (60.4 Miles) (97.1km).
For the final stage tomorrow, the event starts at Kara Kara, Linden at 08:00hrs and concludes at Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown. (64.5 Miles) (103.3km).
According to the organizers, in excess of 45 riders including nine from Anguilla have inked their names to contest this weekend’s 171-mile fixture.
Notably absent will be Team Coco’s Raynauth Jeffrey, Hamza Eastman, Stephano Husbands, Jamaul John, Andre Abdul, Christopher Holder and Geron Williams who are all campaigning on the US circuit.
Note: The race organizers will provide hotel accommodation for cyclists and officials. Meals will also be provided for the riders and officials.
