Combatants in the fistic sport, both in the amateur and professional ranks have brought much glory to Guyana especially during the last five decades.
With that in mind, US-based promoter Seon Bristol is of the opinion that the sport must be highlighted among the numerous events being staged to observe Guyana’s 50th Independence.
Said president of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle “Seon believes that it’s only fitting that the sport of boxing which has brought so much glory to this country, the amount of Commonwealth titles, world titles, the only Olympic medal to be showcased.”
Ninvalle noted yesterday that Bristol “has proposed to sponsor an amateur event on the 28th (of May) for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations.”
The GBA head also revealed that the aim is to have the event staged outdoors, “but we know what is going on with the inclement weather.”
Ninvalle was however certain that fixture will only cater for pugilists 16 and under.
“They will take us into the future for the next eight to 12 years so that is our focus.”
A venue for the event is still to be decided but Ninvalle told Stabroek Sport that the West Coast Demerara, West Bank Demerara, Linden and Berbice are being considered. (Emmerson Campbell)
