Uitvlugt Warriors climbed atop the Stag Beer West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) (WDFA) League after downing Golden Warriors 2-0 on Saturday at the Den Amstel Community ground.
Goalkpeeping blunders handed the Uitvlugt unit the hard-fought win as Keith Fraser recorded a brace in the 42nd and 44th minutes respectively.
The first error occurred when a left side cross was spilt by the custodian into the path of Fraser who made no mistake from inside the penalty area.
The second mistake occurred moments later as a left side strike from the forward went through the grasp of the ‘shot-stopper’. Due to the win, Uitvlugt now occupies the top spot with six points from two matches.
The losing team, on the other hand, remain on zero points from one match. Meanwhile, home side Den Amstel continued their upward curve in the standings, edging Young Achievers 1-0.
In a contest highlighted by end to end action and several missed chances on either side, Gavin Graham sealed the vital three points as be directed his header past the advancing goalkeeper, after latching onto a cross from the right side of the field.
With the result, Den Amstel have six points from three matches and occupy the second positon due to their weaker goal differential. The losing team occupies fourth position on three points from two matches.
Action in the event is set to continue on Saturday and Sunday. All matches in the event will be played at Den Amstel Community Centre ground. Prize monies for the top four finishers will be announced shortly by the association.
