The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, which was put on hold owing to incessant rainfall and the friendly International fixture between the Golden Jaguars and Canada’s U23 side, will resume today at the Leonora Sports Facility with a doubleheader.
The feature contest of the night will witness the resumption of a fierce rivalry when third positioned Alpha United lock horns with fourth placed Pele FC from 21:00hrs.
It will be the second meeting of the sides in this round.
Alpha United will enter today’s contest as favourites due to their 5-0 win in the previous encounter.
Alpha United has scored some 30 goals at a rate of 2.5 goals per game, led by the clinical duo of Delon Lanferman and Anthony Abrams.
Defensively, Alpha United has conceded 11 goals from their 12 matches which is the second best rearguard and they have the likes of Solomon Austin, Colin Nelson, Joshua Browne and Alex Murray to thank for that showing.
Pele, on the other hand, has registered 14 goals at a rate of 1.16 goals per match. An improvement of the numbers will be needed from the likes of Gregory `Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Omallo Williams, Deon Alfred and Colwyn Beckles.
Defensively, Pele has conceded goals from 12 encounters which is the third best backline.
Jumane Somerset, Mark McLean and Shemroy Porter have been responsible for that effort.
Meanwhile, the opening contest at 19:00hrs will pit league leaders Slingerz FC against sixth placed Buxton United.
Winner of the League Finale round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
The season champion will then be crowned when the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale respectively faceoff in a single matchup. That winner will then earn an automatic berth at the CFU level.
If the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale rounds are the same team, they will earn the automatic CFU spot, with the second berth going to the team with the most accumulated points in both rounds non-inclusive of the eventual season champion.
