Corriverton resident Javid Balgobin, who was behind the wheel of motor car PSS 1636, when it is alleged that a cyclist rode into his path, yesterday faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was granted $250,000 bail, following a bail application by attorney-at-law Ian Anamayah.
Particulars of the charge state that on May 13, last at Kilcoy Public Road, he drove motor car PSS 1636 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Chetram Deonarine.
In his bail application Anamayah said, his client, aged 25 years, of Lot 41 Queenstown, Corriverton, is an electrician at the Skeldon Sugar Estate. He was married during December last, and also supports his ailing parents, being the sole breadwinner in the family.
Granting the pre trial liberty, the Magistrate said she has considered the defendant’s age and the fact that he has no antecedents .
Deonarine, a fisherman of Kilcoy/Chesney Village, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Monday after being transferred to that health institution last Friday.
The forty-nine-year-old Deonarine was cycling along the thoroughfare when the accident occurred. The unconscious man was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, after being examined by a doctor he was transferred to the GPHC where he succumbed.
Balgobin is expected to return to court on June 6.
