Defending champions Amelia’s Ward Russians, Magics, Team 25 and High Rollers clinched hard-fought quarter-final berths when the Guinness of the Streets Linden edition continued on Tuesday at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.
In front of a large gathering, Russians edged Main Street Panthers 1-0. Shawn Daniels settled the contest in the 18th minute, directing his right foot effort into the right corner of the net. Meanwhile, Team 25 dismissed Constab 2-0. Quacey Johnson opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful strike from the right side into the left side, after collecting a left side pass following a passing combination.
The result was sealed one minute later as Kennard Tyrell scored compliments of a first time slot from the right side into the lower left hand corner, following a pass from the left side of the field. Also, Magics edged Retrieve Unknowns 1-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 0-0.
The opening round of penalty kicks was unable to separate the teams as they both missed from the distance. Magics then took the lead in the second round as they scored after Unknowns missed once again.
Needing to score at the start of the third and final to keep their chances alive, Unknowns sealed their own exit as they failed from the distance.
Also, High Rollers grounded Eagles 1-0. Jamal Allen clipped the wings of Eagles in the third minute with a strike from the center which settled into the lower right corner
In other results, Classic-6 edged Half Mile/One Mile by a 2-1 margin. Colwyn Draws recorded a brace in the fifth and 13th minutes while Orlando Adams scored in the 20th minute for the loser.
Meanwhile, last year’s losing finalist Wisroc edged Future Stars 2-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended scoreless. On the other hand, Hard-knocks dismissed Royal Youths 4-0.
Roy Bobb-Semple scored as early as 18 seconds into the game and returned to score again in the 11th minute while Trenton Lashley and Randy Small scored in the 13th and 16th minute respectively. Similarly, Silver Bullets riddled FC Deportes by an identical score line.
Clifton Halley opened the scoring with only 30 second on the road before Rawle Gittens, Deshawn Freeman and Damian Williams scored in the third, 10th and 19th minute correspondingly.
The event will resume today with the quarterfinal final at the same venue. Hard-knocks will oppose Classic-6 while Silver Bullets will tackle Wisroc. The final two fixtures will pit Team 25 against Magics and High Rollers against Russians.
Winner of the event will pocket the Championship trophy and $400,000 while the second placed unit will collect $150,000 and the corresponding accolade. The third and fourth placed unit will receive $75,000 and $50,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
