The Region Six administration will be assuming responsibility for refuelling a drainage pump in the Rose Hall, Corentyne area, since the cash-strapped GuySuCo cannot afford to do it any longer.
This was confirmed by Regional Chairman David Armogan, who told Stabroek News that GuySuCo has written the region and indicated that it can no longer afford to buy fuel for the pump, which uses about 500 gallons of fuel per week.
“We of course will have to now find additional money to buy fuel to run that pump in Rose Hall,” he added.
According to Armogan, for many years GuySuCo has been responsible for running the pump, which also provides relief to Kilcoy and Hampshire residents.
He went on to state that the region finds itself in a situation where it has to extend its support beyond the normal realms. He explained that the region has also been supporting all of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in the region, since they have not yet received any subventions from government.
“The NDCs depend almost completely on the region to drain water out of their area as well,” he said, while noting that the additional fuel purchase will take a toll on the region’s fuel bill.
