Guyana hopes of qualifying for the semi-final round of the Pan American Junior Hockey Championships were all but extinguished as they lost to Mexico 1-7 yesterday in Toronto, Canada.
Havcing lost 1-8, at the hands of Chile in their opening game, Guyana grabbed the lead as Aroydy Branford opened the scoring in the 10th minute compliments of a penalty corner conversion.
However, the momentum of the contest changed as Mexico equalized through Raymundo Lemus who netted seven minutes later with a finish into the left side Yamil Mendez gave the Mexicans the lead six minutes later with a strike into the roof of the net before Irvin Chavez pushed the advantage to 3-1 in the 36th minute with a conversion into the right side.
Chavez added his name to the scorer’s sheet once more in the 55th minute to push the score line to 4-1 before Daniel Ranger scored the fifth goal for the Spanish-speaking nation four minutes later with a conversion from the right side.
Luis Villegas added to the score line in the 67th minute, redirecting an initial left sided shot into the right hand corner of the net from just outside the right post.
The result was then completed in the dying seconds of the affair as Ivan Arballo scored with a penalty conversion into the lower left corner.
With the result, Guyana remain on zero points and in the cellar position while Mexico climbed to six points. Guyana will now conclude their group campaign tomorrow against hosts Canada.
