A miner was remanded to prison after he was charged in a city court with unlawful wounding.
Reynaldo DaSilva appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Heeranand Boodhram on May 18 at 111 Miles Potaro, Mahdia.
The defendant was not require to plead to the indictable charge.
According to his attorney Jerome Khan, the defendant and Boodhram, who was his employer, had an argument over money owed to the defendant. It was during the argument that a scuffle ensued and the defendant subsequently sustained injuries to his neck—resulting in him having to wear a neck brace—his left cheek, right forehead and a stab wound.
The defendant’s attorney further stated that his client was dragged on the road by Boodhram’s vehicle, in what he believes was an attempt to kill him.
However, prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that the defendant sustained his injuries after he was apprehended by public-spirited citizens. He added that Boodhram remains hospitalized.
Medicals were presented by the prosecution for both the defendant and Boodhram.
DaSilva was remanded to prison by the Chief Magistrate and will appear again on July 18 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
