As the investigation into Monday’s alleged staged robbery outside the Demerara Bank branch at Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara continues, the police were yesterday granted more time by the High Court to keep the three suspects in custody.
Contacted yesterday afternoon, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that during the course of yesterday the police applied for an extension of detention period and were granted 72 hours more.
As a result, the two guards attached to RK’s Security Services, Damion Pearce and Cleveland Pyle, remain in custody. Also still detained is Pyle’s wife.
Two other suspects remain on the run.
The incident occurred on Monday around 8 pm during which Pearce was shot to his left foot. He was admitted at the George-town Public Hospital (GPH) and was discharged on Tuesday. Following his discharge, he was arrested.
The Guyana Police Force, in a press release had said the security guards were making a night deposit when they were attacked by an armed man. “The perpetrator shot Pearce and relieved him of the night deposit bag which contained an undisclosed amount of cash that had been collected from business places and two .32 revolvers with 10 rounds and escaped in a motor vehicle driven by an accomplice,” the police said.
On Wednesday, the police managed to gather new information in relation to the crime following the arrest of the suspects. They have also recovered money and a firearm that was reported stolen during the alleged attack.
Stabroek News was told that the stolen cash and the firearm were found buried in a shallow grave behind an ‘A’ Field, Sophia squatting area house.
