The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and Seon Bristol of Briso Promotions will team up tonight to stage a ‘Golden Jubilee Independence’ boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Scheduled for a 7pm start, the 15-fight event will also be used to honour several prominent boxers of the past.
This is according to president of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle.
He said “For this card which is being held in part of the 50th Independence, we are going to be using the occasion to honour several former boxers like, Lennox Blackmore, Kenny Bristol, Winfield Braithwaite and Michael Parris.”
Ninvalle added that Blackmore was the first Guyanese to win a Commonwealth title (1977), Bristol the first to win that title at home (1979) while Braithwaite was the first Guyanese pugilist to win a Commonwealth gold medal.
Parris of course remains Guyana’s solitary Olympic medalist. He snared bronze as a bantamweight at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Russia.
Added Ninvalle “So we will use the occasion to give back and honor those who would have given commendable services through the years.”
Admission is set at $500. See you there. (Emmerson Campbell)
