Golden Jaguars stalwart Ricky Shakes will make a return to the senior squad after being shortlisted by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in the squad to tackle Curacao and United States Virgin Islands in the upcoming Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup Qualifiers second round.
The veteran Boreham Wood FC midfielder was named in the squad which departed local shores yesterday and features several overseas-born as well as based players. Guyana will faceoff with Curacao and United States Virgin Islands on Tuesday and Friday respectively in the corresponding countries.
He was a member of the Golden Jaguars 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign and chose to play for Guyana, where his father was born despite also being eligible to play for Trinidad.
According to a press release, the 19 member squad features nine overseas-based players in Sheldon Holder and Pernel Schultz (Trinidad and Tobago); Samuel Cox, Jake Newton and Ricky Shakes (England), Walter Moore (Finland); Brandon Beresford and Emery Welshman (USA) and Christopher Nurse (Puerto Rico).
The members of the local contingent are Alex Murray, Solomon Austin, Colin Nelson, Kester Jacobs, Eon Alleyne, Devon Millington, Daniel Wilson, Dwight Peters, Quincy Adams and Trayon Bobb. Notable absentees include the recently suspended Gregory Richardson as well as forwards Hubert Pedro and Delon Lanferman.
The members of the technical squad are Head-Coach Jamaal Shabazz, Assistant Coach Wayne Dover, Goalkeeper Coach Andrew Hazel, Trainer Anson Ambrose, Physiotherapist Duane Saunders, Equipment Manager Trevor Burnett, Equipment Officer Earl Paul and Team Manager Rawle Adams
“The Golden Jaguars departed Guyana today for Curacao and will play Curacao at the Ergilio Hato Stadium at 20:00hrs. Guyana’s second game will be played against USVI at the Adelita Cancryn Playing Field, St. Thomas, USVI beginning at 16:15hrs.”
Guyana has been placed in Group Three of the five-group second round phase of the tournament.
Round 3 of the tournament will take place October 3-11, the fifth place playoff November 7-15 and the final May 2017.
