Dear Editor,
I would like to extend my congratulations to all those persons who were announced as the nominees for National Awards on the flag-raising occasion on the eve of our 50th Independence celebrations.
It is always good for a nation to acknowledge and honour citizens who have contributed to the development of the country.
Unfortunately I have to express my utter disappointment in the fact that not even one person who has contributed to the development of sports was named for a national honour.
There are many deserving persons who over the decades have served sport well in the spheres of actual sports or in administration or both, and for there to have been this woeful omission is most unfortunate. Are persons in sports only good for photo opportunities?
Say what you will about former Director of Sport Neil Kumar, he ensured that in every National Awards list there was at least one sporting personality honoured. I trust that this omission will not recur.
Yours faithfully,
K A Juman-Yassin
