Charges are likely to be laid today in connection with the injuries sustained by two persons, including a female police officer, during last week’s Guyana Independence J’ouvert celebration.
Contacted for a comment on the matter yesterday, Commander of ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken said the suspects are expected to appear in court today.
Hicken explained that while he is not aware of the police officer being injured during the incident, he can only confirm that the suspects will be charged with resisting police arrest.
“If the medical record shows that injuries were sustained, charges will be laid accordingly,” he noted.
The policewoman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention after she was reportedly assaulted by a patron at the event, which was held at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
David DaSilva, a lighting technician, was also hit in his head with a glass bottle after he warned a woman against rocking a video wall. A male friend of the woman attacked him with the bottle, causing heavy bleeding.
The commotion continued when the police attempted to arrest the woman.
Friends of the woman attempted to pull her away and it was one of them who struck the policewoman, who then suffered a seizure.
DaSilva was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he received stitches to the wounds and was sent home.
The injured policewoman has not been identified.
When contacted by this newspaper yesterday, DaSilva said since the incident he has not heard from the police and as far as he is aware the suspect was not arrested.
