A construction worker was found dead along the Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice public road, after a suspected early morning hit and run yesterday.
Dead is Rajeshwar Rampadarat, 27, called Randy, of Lot 423 Block X, Belvedere Village, Corentyne, Berbice, who was found in the wee hours of the morning by residents. He was bleeding profusely and appeared to have several broken bones.
Police have taken a GuySuCo driver into custody as part of their investigation.
Rampadarat’s mother, Vilma Mootooveeren, said her son was home up to the time she went to bed the night before.
After she woke up in the morning, she recounted, family and friends that live along the public road called her to inform her that her son was in an accident and his body was on the road. Mootooveeren said that her husband and another son immediately rushed to the scene and confirmed her worst fears.
Residents who live on the main road told Stabroek News that around 5.30am yesterday, an alarm was raised by a passerby about a body on the road, which was later confirmed to be Rampadarat.
According to residents, Rampadarat, who was a labourer at Kris Jagdeo Construction, was known to consume a lot of alcohol. Residents stated that they saw a truck pass by and shortly after Rampadarat’s body was discovered.
“When me go out, one bai who been deh de say that he pass and he see he (Rampadarat) drunk and lie down on the road and he say he tell he to move,” a resident said.
Acting Traffic Chief Timothy Williams told this newspaper that one person was in custody assisting with the investigation. He stated that the person in custody is a driver, who is contracted by GuySuCo and operates a fuel tanker.
