An East Canje, Berbice man has been sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to trafficking some 14 pounds of ganja that was found during a police search of his home.
Rawle Victor, of Lot 187 Number Two Village, East Canje, pleaded guilty to a joint charge of trafficking 6.3 kilos of cannabis sativa, while his co-accused, Janice Daniels, who is his wife, was released on $75,000 bail after she offered a not guilty plea.
In addition to the four-year jail sentence, Victor was also fined a total of $1,680,000 by Albion Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer and failure to pay the fine will result in him having to spend an additional three years in jail.
Victor was arrested on May 26, 2016, after police found the drugs during a search of his home.
Police Inspector Orin Joseph told the magistrate that a mobile patrol visited the house, where Daniels was found sitting. She was asked to call her common-law husband, Victor, who police requested accompany them on a search of the home.
In one bedroom, several parcels, wrapped in plastic, were found in two black, bulky plastic bags. When opened, the parcels contained, leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be portions of the cannabis plant.
A second bedroom was searched and a green tarpaulin was found under a mattress with leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa.
The husband and wife were arrested and taken to the Reliance Police Station, where they were held before the joint charge was instituted.
Daniels is expected to attend the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on June 13 for her next hearing.
