Guyana began the second round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup Qualifiers in the worst possible manner going down to hosts Curacao by an embarrassing 2-5 score line yesterday at the Ergilio Hato Stadium.
Although Guyana held a 6-2 historical advantage heading into what was the ninth meeting of the nations, it was the home side which drew first blood compliments of a 12th minute conversion.
The 152nd-ranked hosts’ lead proved to be brief as the 132nd-seeded Guyanese equalised eight minutes later.
It was from this point that the matchup went ‘pear shaped’ for the visitors as the home side scored four goals to Guyana’s lone conversion.
The rout started with a 45th minute conversion to give the home side a 2-1 lead at the halfway interval,before two goals were conceded in less than a minute to make it 4-1 early in the second period.
The first of the double strike occurred in the 66th minute with the second occurring moments later in the 67th minute. It was at this point that Guyana scored to reduce the lopsided score line through an 82nd minute attempt.
However, the aforesaid goal was simply academic in nature as the hosts capped off the performance with their fifth strike in the 90th minute. With the result, Guyana dropped to the bottom of the standings on zero points while Curacao moved atop the group with three points.
Guyana will now need to win their final group fixture on June 4th away to the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) at the Adulate Camryn Playing Field to keep their hopes alive of qualifying to the next round.
Round 3 of the Championship will begin in October 3-11; Fifth Place Playoff November 7-15; and the finals are scheduled for May 2017.
