Dear Editor,
I noted that the British have renewed confidence in Guyana according to an article published in the Kaieteur News of June 1. That report mentioned that the British High Commissioner [Greg] Quinn and the visiting British MP, Mr James Duddridge, said there was a renewed relationship between the British and the Caribbean. MP Duddridge even reminded the media that Prime Minister David Cameron visited Jamaica last year.
Now, every rational being in the Caribbean knows that Cameron made that visit to Jamaica in an attempt to foil the reparations quest of the Caribbean people. To date it is the African and Indigenous people who have made known their intentions, but it is well known that Indians are considering a similar move, which cause has been strengthened by Indian Prime Minister Modi’s statements on reparations.
The Jamaican people saw that British shallow attempt of presenting David Cameron to them as a spin doctor and rebuffed it. However, the British seem to have caught some of our leaders, and lo and behold Guyana is going to get a grant of £52 million.
There are many ways to kill a cat, however my knowledge of the British is that they are very inflexible when dealing with local people. Since the complete David Cameron offer was clearly an attempt to rid us of thinking of reparations, then any part of it would also carry that goal. Thus I am wondering if our leaders are hiding something from us about this newly found British willingness to be nice to Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Elton McRae
