LONDON, CMC – Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter has tested positive for a banned stimulant following a re-examination of hundreds of samples form the Beijing Olympics eight years ago, international media reports said yesterday.
Traces of Methylhexanamine were reportedly found in the 30-year-old Carter’s ‘A’ sample after the Olympic movement’s governing body, the International Olympic Committee, asked for 454 samples from the 2008 showpiece to be re-tested.
If Carter’s ‘B’ samples also return positive, the athlete could face a ban.
Reports had emerged over the last 48 hours at that a high profile Jamaican sprinter had tested positive but that it was not reigning World and Olympic champion, Usain Bolt.
Significantly, however, Carter was part of the 4×100 metres team including Bolt, Asafa Powell and Michael Frater, which clocked a then world record 37.10 seconds to win gold over Trinidad and Tobago.
Carter also won gold with the relay team at the London 2012 Olympics as well as at the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Championships.
He is yet to run this season because of a foot injury but is expected to return in time of the Jamaica national championships later this month.
Jamaica now face losing the gold medal from the 2008 Olympics.
