President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) John Flores said yesterday that the Primary School Coaching programme facilitated by the Samaritan Sports Support system will help teachers to become better coaches thus ensuring students are properly tutored about the sport.
The course, which ran for a week, was attended by teachers from across some of the country’s primary institutions and was geared mainly towards ensuring the sport is properly introduced into the school system while affording teachers the opportunity to function as coaches.
Facilitator of the clinic, Robert Sam, told Stabroek Sport yesterday at the culmination of the course at the National Gymnasium, that the sessions were very well conducted and he was happy at the turnout. Sam described the teachers as “The real heroes” for being successful in their quest to become full-fledged volleyball coaches.
He said that over the duration of the course, his participants were very receptive and interactive adding that the key was to ensure the teachers will now return to the schools and help create a reservoir for young volleyball players which constitute for the next generation of youth players.
Meanwhile, Flores, who was also present at the closing of the clinic said that he was happy to see the turnout by the teachers and explained that while this course might be over, the teachers will continue their training as coaches as to better help boost the level of volleyball when they begin sessions with their students.
Flores added that the initiative will ensure Guyana has a stronger contingent of Under-16 players for the future while it also helps production-wise with a larger number of coaches in and around the school system.
Switching gears to the upcoming Male South American U23 Championships which begins on June 18 in Colombia, the Guyana Olympic House yesterday donated GY$400,000 to the GVF in order to offset a few of the trip’s expenses.
Flores added that logistical aspects regarding the preparation for the championships have been going good thus far. The GVF President said he’s confident that the Guyana team will give good accounts of themselves and is banking on their experience in order to do well.
