St. Cuthbert’s Mission Secondary dismantled home side Hauraruni Secondary by an 11-0 score line when the 6th annual Digicel Secondary Schools football championships continued yesterday at the Hauraruni Community ground.
It was a lopsided encounter from the first whistle as the visitors raced off to a 7-0 lead heading into the halftime interval, effectively ending the contest. Keoan Kattow led the assault with a first half helmet-trick netting in the sixth, 17th, 18th and 25th minutes.
He was assisted by Zak Ferreira who recorded a hat-trick in the first, 14th and 16th minutes. The rout continued in the second period as a further four goals were recoded.
Mark Clenkian found the back of the net in the 49th and 62nd minutes while Elroy Dundas etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 55th and 75th minute.
Action in the event is set to continue today from 15:30hrs at several venues. In Georgetown at the Tucville ground, Sophia will oppose Charlestown while Mae’s Secondary will tackle Kingston Secondary at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
At the Beterverwagting (BV) ground, Buxton Secondary will oppose Plaisance Secondary. Over at the Leonora Sports Facility, Covent Garden will tackle Providence. The final fixture at Burnham Park in Berbice will pit Canje Secondary against Overwinning Secondary.
The championship which will be played in the traditional knockout format, will be staged in every region and will conclude on July 31st at the National Stadium in Providence.
Christianburg/Wismar Secondary has held a stranglehold on the event as they are current four time defending champions. The other victor of the most prestigious event in the country was Georgetown Technical Institute who won the inaugural event.
The winning team is set to receive $1,000,000 toward the funding off a school project and the championship trophy while the second place unit will receive $700,000 and the runners-up accolade.
The third and fourth placed teams are set to receive $400,000 and $350,000 and the corresponding trophy. Similarly, $100,000 will be awarded to each zone winner.
