The much anticipated People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Congress has been set for December 16, 17 and 18 at the Cotton Field Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast.
General Secretary Clement Rohee made the announcement at the party’s weekly press conference yesterday, bringing an end to speculation that internal rifts would have led to a postponement.
The last PPP congress was held in Berbice in August, 2013 and according to the party’s constitution, one is due this year.
Sources close to the party had said that former presidents Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar and Rohee would be looking to gather votes at the Congress and to have their supporters elected to the new Central Committee.
The sources had also suggested that Ramotar could well challenge Rohee for the position of general secretary once the Congress is over while Jagdeo would be assessing the prospects of a possible run for a third term in 2020.
Jagdeo has disputed reports that there is internal fighting within the PPP and blasted criticisms by former executive Ralph Ramkarran that he is not keen on the party holding its Congress soon.
“Frankly speaking, if it’s held tomorrow or next week I don’t care. It does not make a difference to me,” Jagdeo had said at a press conference.
