A mammoth crowd at the Haslington Tarmac witnessed the crowning of a new champion as Beterverwagting (BV)-B edged North Haslington 1-0 in the final of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets East Coast edition on Sunday.
With the matchup heading into the realm of penalty kicks in the dying minutes of extra time, Stephen Miller brought the cagey affair to life as he netted in the 39th minute to stun the home crowd.
Lurking on the left side of the playing area, Miller, upon collecting a pass from the right side, stabbed his effort into the centre of the net despite being challenged by the final defender, in the process sealing the title after his team had fallen at the same hurdle two years prior. Due to the outcome, BV-B walked away the championship trophy and $250,000. They also won the right to represent the zone at the National Playoffs.
Similarly, BV-B’s victory also created history as the community became the first to have two teams win the championship following BV-A’s triumph in last year’s edition. For the losers, they walked away the respective accolade and $150,000. In the third place playoff, Melanie-A edged Plaisance-B 1-0. Rondell Assanah scored in the 30th minute. With the result, Melanie-A walked away with $100,000 and the respective accolade.
Plaisance-B collected $50,000 and the corresponding trophy. In the earlier semi-final round, BV-B downed Plaisance-B 3-2 on sudden death penalty kicks after normal and extra time finished 0-0.
Haslington North edged Melanie-A 1-0 compliments of a Randy Waldron effort in the 17th minute. The tourney will now move to the National Championship which is scheduled to commence tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
