A fisherman charged with breaking and entering a home and stealing over $500,000 in items, yesterday denied committing the offence and said he was in prison at the time.
Manraj Adnarine, 41, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was read two burglary charges. The first charge alleged that Adnarine on June 17 at Ruimveldt, broke and entered the dwelling house of Cedric Richardson and stole a TV set valued $60,000 and a blender valued $25,000, the property of Tamilla Lowenfield. It is also alleged that the defendant stole from Richardson’s residence, a gold chain valued $200,000, a gold band valued $200,000 and a tape deck valued $30,000, the property of Richardson.
Adnarine, who works as a fisherman, pleaded not guilty to both offences. He told the court that on the date the incident allegedly occurred, he was in the Camp Street prison serving a four-month sentence for simple larceny.
When asked the exact date when he was sentenced, the defendant told the court that he could not remember but recalled being sentenced in Court 9. The prosecutor said that the four-month sentence was in Adnarine’s file.
The defendant, however, was unable to recall the exact date of his release but said he believes it was about four to five days ago.
After listening to him, the Chief Magistrate remanded Adnarine based on the fact that he has no fixed place of abode. The matter will be called again on June 24.
