Dear Editor,
On June 11, the people of Region One came alive and were very emotional, especially those in Mabaruma. It will always be a date to remember.
A few months ago the President of Guyana, Mr David Granger, made a promise that Mabaruma would have a radio station, and he has fulfilled his promise; it has become a reality for the region. After a long time the people have access to the news from all over Guyana.
The weather was quite favourable on this historic occasion and people came from different parts of the region to witness the inauguration of 95.1 FM, the voice of Region One.
The ceremony was declared open by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, and it was very informative. There were several speakers including ministers of government. Many government officials were present except the Regional Chairman and the Regional Vice-Chair, who were absent because of personal duties. The Chairman was slated to speak on this occasion and he was quite aware of that. One resident mentioned it was not surprising to him because he does not participate in government functions, even when the President is there.
The Chairman engages in no collaborative effort to develop the region and empower the youths, but he was commended by a young speaker for his co-operative effort in making the event possible.
The REO received official compliments for his moral support during the training programme and the remodelling of the building which was completed on time. The Mayor of Mabaruma, Mr Henry Smith had the opportunity for the first time to speak to residents and made it known that the Town Clerk and himself were ready for action.
The year is slipping away from us and we need some money and attention to be given to our roads that are in a deplorable condition. We do not want to hear that engineers are coming from Georgetown to take care of our roads; we need action.
The entire week for Mabaruma Region was very healthy a few days ago since they had the opening of a seminar for youths, empowering them by improving their existing skills and acquiring new ones. The seminar was declared open by Junior Minister Valerie Garrido Lowe, and lasted five days. It was well attended by youths from different communities.
Mr Nagamootoo and other ministers spoke on that occasion, except for the Regional Chairman; he only sits at uncontrollable RDC meetings that bring forth no fruit.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Hope
Former RDC Councillor
